Poetry : Someone Like You
Someone Like You - Izzati Rafiee
It was always when
the glimmer in my eyes caught
a sight of random someone
who looked as nearly as you
that I'm again reminded
of the moments in vain.
Neither that I forget
Nor was it a mistake
But yet again, the memories seem to resurface
For every time I caught a sight of
someone like you.
It could probably be on the bus
On the bumpy way back to our home.
Or probably at the crossroads
In the ocean of people with loads.
It would be sometimes at the hallway
Of accidents and urgency,
on the seats with wheels
How I used to push you around
and you'd casually do the same.
That random someone, did reminded me of you.
It would probably the sunglasses
- for the sun that had been blindly hurting your eyes.
Or maybe it's the checkered shirt
- for what you've been wearing for the rest of your life.
Or probably it's just the heavy lines on the face
- for time that had been eating your age, for almost seven decades.
Buff before, you were then skinny,
For the chemicals and meds you've been taking
And over time your hair would fall,
which was once jet black; that in the end naturally bleached into a solid grey.
Those, were engraved in my mind
That I somehow really wish to disarm
Because every time I saw a random someone like you
I'm reminded of the one person
Who left the world
before I do.

Poet's note:
I recently read the poem at an open mic session and I was beyond proud. The poem is rather dedicated to my father who passed away three years ago due to cancer.
The day this post was published was the day of his passing. It's been three years since he left, yet the poem actually summarizes how I've been feeling even after those long years.
Al-Fatihah to him,
the man whom I look up the most.
Even until today.
I love you.
